What is Amazon DSP?

Amazon DSP is an online advertising platform that allows advertisers to programmatically purchase display and video ads across a variety of websites and mobile apps. This platform gives advertisers access to Amazon’s extensive inventory of digital media, as well as the ability to target specific audiences and individual customers. With Amazon DSP, businesses can reach more customers with better precision than ever before.

Amazon DSP is powered by advanced machine learning technology that helps optimize ad campaigns for the highest possible performance. The platform offers detailed reporting features so marketers can measure their success in real-time and make adjustments to their strategies quickly and easily. Additionally, Amazon DSP provides pricing models based on different objectives, such as impressions or clicks, so advertisers can tailor their budget plans based on their goals. All these features make it easy for businesses to maximize their ROI when using Amazon’s powerful digital advertising tools.

Amazon DSP can be an amazing advertising platform if you are selling on Amazon.

We are currently spending around $12k/month on DSP returning about $50k, for a little over a 4.0 RoAS.

Some of our other clients are getting better results than that, but they are spending less.

Now with Amazon DSP, if you go through Amazon, they will make you commit to spending at least $30k/month in ad spend for them to manage it. If you are going through an agency like Profitable Pineapple Ads, then you no longer have a monthly minimum.

Apply to work with Profitable Pineapple Ads for Amazon DSP

In this video, I dig a little deeper into how we are getting a 6.0 return on ad spend (RoAS) with Amazon DSP, which was an improvement from the above 4.0 RoAS.

This is something you should do in addition to Amazon PPC, and in my mind you should have Amazon PPC (Sponsored Products) rocking and rollin’ before you think Amazon DSP.

With that said, if you are in the consumable space and are already making sales, Amazon DSP is a no-brainer.

Focus Areas for Amazon DSP

Start at bottom of funnel (#1) and move to the middle (#4)

#1 Drive repeat purchases.

If you sell a consumable, then hopefully you are getting customers to subscribe and save with your products. For those who don’t subscribe, you can run ads to remind them that it’s time to repurchase.

Let’s say you sell a supplement in a 30-day supply bottle. You can target someone who has purchased, but not in the last 30 days. You can run just a simple ad reminding shoppers that your product is awesome. Maybe getting buyers back to your product detail page will also encourage them to subscribe and save.

#2 Cross-sell with “bought X, not Y” campaigns.

Do you sell complementary products? If so, you can build an audience of shoppers who’ve purchased one of your products, but not another complementary product you offer. For example, let’s say you sell guitars and guitar cases.

What if someone buys your guitar, but not one of your cases? You can run targeted ads touting the features and benefits of your cases to people who’ve recently purchased one of your guitars.

Or maybe you sell a line of skincare products and someone has purchased your eye serum, but not your moisturizer. Why not run ads to your serum buyers showing how your serum and moisturizer work together to create amazing results?

#3 Retargeting those who have visited your product page, but have not purchased your product.

#4 Steal your competitor’s customers with competitive conquesting.

This is arguably, one of the most powerful and exciting ways to leverage Amazon DSP ads. In addition to running Amazon ads, our agency manages YouTube and Google ads for eCommerce brands. We wish we had an option for this level of competitive targeting on Google and YouTube as well, but sadly, we don’t.

This type of targeting is unique to Amazon DSP. With this option, you can target competitive shoppers in one of two ways – Shoppers who have viewed your competitor’s products, but haven’t purchased yet. – Shoppers who have purchased your competitor’s products in the past

Amazon PPC can be as difficult or as simple as you want to make it. What I commonly see when I work with clients is that they’ve been implementing too many different strategies and are now confused as to what to do next.

Their ACoS (advertising cost of sale) is way too high (but they aren’t sure what their ACoS should be), they don’t know what keywords to pause, or they don’t know how to expand their campaigns to scale them.

If any of this feels like you, YOU ARE COMPLETELY NORMAL.

Scale Your Amazon PPC With the 80/20 Strategy

#1 Mistake I see clients make is following TOO MANY strategies and not just one

This simple strategy will help you make more sales and increase your organic rank on Amazon, while decreasing your ad spend inside Amazon PPC. This is the step that your competition is NOT doing. I would say less than 5% of Amazon sellers are doing this.

So, what is it?

It is simply mining and then isolating the 20% of search terms in your account that are driving 80% of your results. In this article (and video) I will be walking you through a simple strategy to help scale your campaigns and isolate these search terms. Doing this assumes that you have been running Amazon PPC for at least 30 days and have made sales from it.

Pareto’s Principle for Amazon PPC

Before we get started on how to do this, I want to explain Pareto’s Principle to you and then how it applies to Amazon PPC. According to Better Explained, Pareto’s Principle states that most things in life are not distributed evenly, but rather 20% of the input creates 80% of the results:

20% of your workers produce 80% of the result

20% of your customers create 80% of the revenue

20% of the bugs cause 80% of the crashes

20% of the features cause 80% of the usage

And 20% of customer search terms on Amazon drive 80% of your sales!

Let’s find, isolate, and then SCALE those customer search terms!

What to do with the search terms driving 80% of your sales

I will show you how to find these search terms further down the article, but I first want to explain what to do with them. We want to isolate these search terms into their own Amazon PPC campaign so we can better customize our strategy for increasing our sales and organic rank on Amazon, while bringing down the ad spend for this search term.

Once we have pinpointed the 20% of the search terms that are driving 80% of your results (it is fewer words than you think), I want you to put EACH SEARCH TERM into a SEPARATE campaign.

Worth repeating for clarification… One search term PER Amazon PPC campaign.

Why do we want to do this?

This will allow us to customize every single part of that campaign to that search term alone. You can customize quite a few features of the campaign including budget, campaign bidding strategy, and adjust bids by placements. A few quick recommendations to get started with this are an unlimited budget, because it is a highly profitable search term for you that is driving most of your sales, dynamic bids – down only bidding strategy, and adjusting top of search (first page) by 20%.

If you have a LIMITED budget, then make sure to only make an EXACT match campaign with this search term.

In the example above, this is my most profitable search term and this one campaign with this one search term is driving four sales per day. The product itself sells about 150-200 per day on average for us and we have about 40 of these single search term campaigns that are each driving one to four sales per day. We only use dynamic bids – down only bidding strategy. You can see our top of search is 100% and our product pages are 1%. This is calculated using a formula, and you can find a whole article dedicated to this here.

How to mine your Amazon Search Term Report (Step by Step)

1. Download the Amazon Sponsored Products Search Term Report

2. Upload to Google Sheets

3. Organize and Consolidate Your Report

4. Delete All Keywords That Have Less Than 3 Orders

5. Separate Out Each Product in a New Tab

6. Find the 20% of Your Search Terms That Drive 80% Of Your Results

7. Watch Sales, Rankings, and Profits Soar

1. Download the Amazon Sponsored Products Search Term Report

After logging in to Amazon Seller Central, hover over Reports and click Advertising Reports.

Pick Sponsored Products, Search term report, and put the date range back to 60 days. After you have selected your options, click the yellow Create Report button. Then wait for it to populate and hit download.

2. Upload to Google Sheets

Open a new Google Sheet. Head to File and Import.

Click Upload and then Select the excel spreadsheet that you downloaded from Amazon Seller Central.

Insert a new sheet(s) and hit Import Data

3. Organize and Consolidate Your Report

Next we are going to delete all the columns that we will not be using. The whole point of downloading and checking the search term report is to FIND NEW SEARCH TERMS TO SCALE. Therefore we are going to be deleting most of the words on the search term report as well.

The only data we need for this is:

Campaign Name

Ad Group Name

Targeting

Customer Search Term

Impressions

Clicks

CTR

CPC

Spend

Sales

ACoS

Orders

Conversion Rate

4. Delete All Keywords That Have Less Than 3 Orders

Now that we have deleted all the columns that are not needed, let’s get rid of the search terms that have not made more than 3 sales.

First click the square in the upper left corner to highlight the whole sheet.

Click Data and Sort range.

After that, click Data has a header row, sort by orders, from Z to A.

Highlight all rows that have fewer than 3 orders and delete them.

5. Calculate Your Max CPC

Add 3 columns to the right and title them

Clicks/Order – This will be a formula of =SUM(clicks/orders)

Copy the formula down the entire column

Max CPA (Cost per Acquisition) – This is your profit margin, which I use H10 to quickly calculate (leave blank for now)

Max CPC (Cost-Per-Click) – This will be a formula of =SUM(Max CPA/(clicks/orders))

Copy the formula down the entire column

Here is a spreadsheet to copy and paste these formulas

6. Separate Out Each Product in a New Tab

If you only have one product, this part will be extremely easy as you are done sorting into separate tabs. But if you have more than one product, we want each product to have its own tab so we can find what search terms we can scale for each product.

To do this, we will now sort by campaign name.

Once in its own tab, label that tab with the product name.

7. Find the 20% of Your Search Terms That Drive 80% Of Your Results

Now we are going to sort by Orders again, first from highest to lowest. As you can see the majority of our sales are coming from ONE search term, but there are a few others that I will be isolating as well. Two additional items to note:

Almost all of these search terms are making us profitable sales, but we are only going to isolate 3 search terms into separate campaigns. If you have the budget to go after more keywords, then go for it.

Going after your competitor search terms (cliradex and ocusoft) will cost you a lot more and most likely lead to unprofitable sales. WAIT to go after your competitors until you have started to dominate the search terms that will drive more profitable sales.

8. Watch Sales, Rankings, and Profits Soar

Here are the results of our eyelid wipes (if you have irritated eyelids or eyes check them out). The competition that we are going after are big name brands and pharmaceutical companies that invest a TON on Amazon, so we are trying to out maneuver them with this strategy. As you can see, sales are increasing.

But as you continue to mine keywords, your sales will continue to escalate past the competition.

How To Structure Your Amazon PPC Campaigns for Success

Single keyword ad campaigns

Exact match to start (Scale campaigns)

Broad and Auto to follow if budget allows (discovery campaigns) and upload negative phrase list ASAP

Campaign bidding strategy – down only

Top of search bid adjustment start at 20%

Use Calculated CPC as initial bid

This is a repeated area from earlier, but I can’t emphasize the importance enough.

Exact match campaigns are the campaigns that allow us to scale.

If your budget allows, you can start to use these same search terms to start discovering new search terms with broad and auto campaigns. The key with broad and auto campaigns is to treat these as discovery campaigns only. Use these to find more search terms to move into exact scale campaigns.

DON’T worry about creating a negative exact match for these search terms that you are moving to exact campaigns. We know a lot of people will say once you create an exact match campaign to put them as a negative exact match in the auto and broad campaigns that we discovered them in. We do NOT do this as it is a waste of your time and the bids will probably be different and show up in different areas.

In addition to that, keeping it in the auto campaigns allows you to show up on product pages that are related to that search term.

Another note with broad and auto campaigns is to have a great negative phrase list to upload so you are not bidding on irrelevant keywords in your campaigns.

We use only the down only campaign bidding strategy and haven’t found much success with the others. We like to increase our top of search bid adjustment around 20% because top of search brings the most sales in about 99% of cases. Finally, use the Max CPC that you calculated above for your initial bid.

Step-By-Step Guide to Setting Up Your Campaigns

REMINDER…AGAIN: ONE SEARCH TERM PER AMAZON PPC CAMPAIGN AS AN EXACT MATCH

1. Click Create Campaign

2. Pick Sponsored Products

3. Settings to use to SCALE

Name your campaign: EX_ASIN_SEARCH TERM

For Example: EX_B07LBJHST7_eyelid wipes

Daily Budget: Should be higher because this is the search term that is driving most of your sales. Steal budget from your other campaigns and make sure this one DOES NOT RUN OUT!

Targeting: Manual Targeting

4. Campaign Bidding Strategy

We want to select Dynamic bids – down only and put Top of search (first page) to at least 20%.

5. Create an ad group

I name the ad group the same since you will have ONE search term per campaign. You will only have this one ad group.

Search for your product and add it.

6. Targeting and Keyword targeting

Select Keyword targeting

Scroll down and select

Enter list

Custom bid is equal to the Max CPC you calculated

Match type of EXACT ONLY

Put your search term in and select Add keywords.

7. Launch Campaign

You don’t need to worry about negative keyword targeting because this is an exact match campaign.

Finally select LAUNCH CAMPAIGN!!

Broad Campaigns

If your budget allows, repeat this process for a broad campaign. You can start to use these same search terms to start discovering new search terms with broad campaigns, but be sure to upload your negative phrase list.

Broad match keywords allows Amazon to display your ad to individuals on a broad basis. This means that your keyword will be matched to search terms that not only match your keyword but are also related to your keyword. This might include synonyms, misspellings, and variations of your keyword.

Again, this will not help you scale, but discover new search terms to scale.

Action Items for Chapter 5

This chapter is where it all starts. This is the strategy put into action that helped us and many others scale their Amazon PPC in less time while profiting more. Stick to this strategy and give it at least an entire month. Here are your action items for this chapter.

Mine and organize your search term report

Create single keyword exact match campaigns with the 80/20 search terms

If budget allows, create broad match single keyword ad campaigns with the same 80/20 search terms

Upload negative phrase list to these broad campaigns

If budget allows, create an auto campaign for your best selling ASINs

Upload negative phrase list to these auto campaigns

They love it so much that they are even willing to give you a 10% bonus as a result of sending in external traffic that converts.

Amazon LOVES external traffic.

Amazon also has the biggest affiliate program in the world (Amazon Associates)

Amazon REWARDS external traffic.

Once you start driving external traffic you will see your keyword rankings skyrocket.

External traffic will not convert as well as other traffic like Amazon PPC.

The reason?

You are sending someone from Google or Facebook to Amazon to purchase before they might be ready.

With that said, even with a lower conversion, this will increase your organic ranking, because Amazon LOVES and REWARDS external traffic.

Introducing Amazon’s Brand Referral Bonus

From Amazon…

Delight customers while improving marketing efficiency and earning a bonus.

Now, you can earn a bonus averaging 10% of product sales driven by your non-Amazon marketing efforts. The more traffic you bring, the more opportunities you have to earn a bonus. The bonus is provided as a credit on your referral fees

How does it work?

1. Generate an Amazon Attribution Tag

Use Amazon Attribution to create tags to measure your non-Amazon marketing efforts. Click the button below to start creating tags using Amazon Attribution, or register if you are not enrolled in the Amazon Attribution program.

Generate referral tags

2. Add the Tag to a Campaign

Once you create the referral tags, you can implement them within your publisher or campaign manager. For more details on how to implement tags for different channels

3. Receive a Bonus

The Bonus will be credited to your account two months after qualifying sales to accommodate order cancellation and customer returns.

What purchases qualify to receive a bonus?

The bonus applies to brand-owned products with an Amazon Attribution tag that originates from a non-Amazon marketing effort. This includes promoted products and additional products purchased from your brand up to 14 days after clicking on the ad.

Can I break down bonuses by campaigns?

Yes, our bonus report helps break down how much bonus was earned by each campaign based on the Amazon Attribution tags you created.

One note repeated on Amazon’s Brand Referral Bonus…

Your ACoS will be much higher for these but you have to remember that Amazon rewards external traffic with increased organic ranking and you get 10% of your sales back

We get about a 2.0 RoAS or a 50% ACoS on these campaigns.

How to generate an attribution Tag

Click Brand Referral Bonus: Seller Central → Brands → Brand Referral Bonus

I want to purposefully keep this section short and to the point. Focus on what I have taught you previously with Sponsored Products. Only if you have budget leftover, go after both Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Display Ads.

Sponsored Brands

Sponsored Brands campaigns help customers discover and engage with your brand in prominent search placements, and generate awareness and consideration with customizable ads that link directly to a landing page or a Store.

Best Practices and Tips

Sponsored Brands cost a lot of money – they will have a higher ACoS and are great for branding, customer acquisition, and scaling, but they are not good for new companies.

80/20 Rule applies again – use the top 20% of search terms that are driving 80% of your sales

Read your customer’s mind – make one ad per search term and use that search term in the headline of the ad

Make separate campaigns for Broad, Phrase, and Exact – keeping them separate again allows for complete customization of that campaign for that search term.

Ad Formats

Product collection promotes multiple products from a landing page of your choice

This is still our favorite as it still looks like Amazon search.

Store Spotlight drives traffic to your storefront if you have created it.

Currently NOT recommended as they have led to higher ACoS from our experiments.

Sponsored Brands Video features a single product with an autoplaying video.

Get these done ASAP

Ideas for SB Video

Simply record footage of your product

Use animated product photos

Make it benefit rich

How to video

Add captions

Sponsored Display Ads

Sponsored Display Ads grow your business by reaching relevant audiences on and off Amazon. Sponsored Display campaigns use auto-generated display creatives that help inspire purchase and have the familiar Amazon look and feel.

Based on the targeting options you select, your ads can run on Amazon desktop and mobile, both on detail pages and across other Amazon pages. Your ads can be configured to reach audiences off Amazon across third- party publishers.

Best Practices

Don’t use SD ads until you have mastered and maximized Sponsored Products

Start with a low bid and low budgets

Product Targeting → Use the same ASINs as you mined from the search term reports for product targeting ads

Make individual campaigns on a per product and per ASIN basis

Don’t use the category targeting option

Targeting

Audiences – Reach audiences based on shopping actions. DON’T USE UNLESS you have consumables, then turn on the Audiences → Purchases only

Views remarketing – Reach custom audiences who viewed product detail pages matching criteria you choose.

Two choices

Target people who looked at similar products (not great)

Target customers who looked at your product (good)

Low budget ($5-$25/day) and low bid ($0.10-$0.15) recommended

Searches – Shoppers who searched for keywords relevant to your advertised products.

Low budget ($5-$25/day) and low bid ($0.10-$0.15) recommended

Purchases – Shoppers who previously purchased your advertised products.

This is an ad that you should start immediately if you have consumables

Higher budget (ex. $25 – $300) higher bid (ex. $2-5)

Product Targeting – Choose specific products or categories to target your ads.

Use the same ASINs from Chapter 9

Depending on your budget can start with as little as $25 for Daily budget or as much as $100

Bidding: For Defensive SD $3-$10 For Offensive $0.25-$1.00 (Depending on how conservative or aggressive you want to be)

Don’t use the category targeting option

Action Items for Chapter 10

Create Sponsored Brand VIDEO Ads ASAP for your best selling search terms.

Create Sponsored Display Product Targeting Ads for the ASINs found in your search term reports and the same ASINs you found from the product targeting ads chapter

Create a Sponsored Display Audiences Purchases campaign for your best selling product and all consumables to test it out

My name is Dr. Travis Zigler.

Am I a real doctor? Yes!

I am a recovering optometrist turned ecommerce entrepreneur. I always told my financial advisers that I would retire from seeing patients by the age of 40 and they all laughed at me…

I did it by age 33.

In the process, I fired over 10 financial advisers during my 8 years of being an optometrist until I found one that supported me.

Along with my wife, Dr. Jenna Zigler, I am the founder of Eye Love, https://eyelovethesun.com, whose mission is to heal 1,000,000 dry eye sufferers naturally. We use the profits from Eye Love to fund free clinics in Jamaica and the US through our charity, the Eye Love Cares Foundation, https://eyelovecares.org. If you ever want to come on a mission trip with us, please reach out to me. You don’t have to be in eye care or a doctor. It will change your life.

Due to the success of Eye Love, others have asked me to help them grow their business online, and more specifically with Amazon, which led to the creation of the Profitable Pineapple Ads Agency (Why Pineapple… Why Not?). We are on a mission to help 1,000 brands profitably scale to over $1 million on Amazon while spending LESS time in their business.

My goal with this book is to provide you a TON of value and give you the exact action items to help you scale your Amazon PPC in less time.

What are we covering in this book

How I find the keywords needed to launch my product and when to launch.

My way-too-easy Amazon PPC strategy..

One quick change you can apply to your Amazon PPC campaigns today that will increase your sales, profit and organic rank… while decreasing your ACoS.

“Sure-fire secret” to creating highly profitable Amazon PPC campaigns that sell like crazy.

How to avoid the #1 mistake Amazon sellers make which causes them to spend a TON on Amazon PPC.

I will be discussing the overall strategy for your Amazon PPC and business, but I am also giving you step-by-step instructions for everything I discuss. I have accompanying videos as well (more on that later).

Who is this for?

This is for Amazon sellers who are feeling stuck and overwhelmed around Amazon advertising.

For those who are just getting started on Amazon, you’ll find out the next easy steps to take to solve your Amazon PPC problems and free yourself from this “confusing” platform.

For more experienced Amazon sellers, you’ll learn the steps to take your Amazon PPC to the next level so you can start to scale your Amazon PPC in less time while spending less money and gaining more profit.

I will also be making you an offer for those that want to get results faster and want help along the way. Throughout this book there are affiliate links (if reading on Kindle or PDF), so if you click on them, it helps support us. I only recommend two softwares to use in this book. I became an affiliate for these programs because they work and it is what we use.

Here’s the deal… this book is incredibly valuable and will help you get further along than most $8,000 courses.

Don’t think that because I am making an offer that it discounts what’s in this book. You have everything you need here.

With that said, let me get the offer out of the way so we can put that behind us and you can know that we are not hiding anything.

First offer – 2019 FREE training

This free course is for the do-it-yourselfers that have a low budget for Amazon ads. This is the exact system that we used in 2019 and the beginning of 2020. It offers tremendous scalability, but is more manual and takes about 5-15 hours per week depending on the size of your account. No additional software is needed.

This is recommended if you are doing under $25,000 per month.

For this free course, we will be using a combination of all the tools Helium-10 offers.
Second offer – Paid training and mastermind

We are no longer offering the paid training and mastermind due to the growth of the agency and clients.

We use Quartile in our agency and in our brand.
This is recommended for those doing over $25,000 per month.

WARNING… You will probably stock out, so make sure your inventory systems are ready to go 🙂 In Eye Love, we are still struggling to stay in stock and we are on pace to do over $6 million in 2021.

Apply to work with us here

With that out of the way, let me take you back to my story and where it all began…

The year was 2017.

My wife and I are both optometrists and owned two optometry practices, while also running our online company, Eye Love.

I was living the entrepreneurial dream.

But I had one problem.

I was working from sunup to sun down.

Can you relate to that?

On top of this, we were also expecting our first child.

I didn’t see how it was possible to run two optometry practices and my online business with a child.

So I analyzed my 3 businesses and decided to go all in to the online business, Eye Love, and sell my two practices.

I was scared and nervous around this decision as we were making over $240,000 in personal income per year from these practices.

We had a few months until our first child came to figure out how to make a full-time income with Eye Love.

The problem was that Amazon PPC costs were sky high and taking up a ton of my time.

I had very minimal profit, and my company almost went bankrupt twice (I was saved by SBA loans).

So I set off on a journey to solve this financial burden that Amazon PPC had caused me, as well as reduce the time I spent on Amazon PPC.

This way I could make enough money to quit my 9-to-5, while having more time for myself and more time to spend with my wife and child.

Have you had that same dream?

I dove into a few courses by all the gurus in the Amazon PPC space and spent close to $10,000 learning from these experts.

As I went through each course, I ended up feeling more confused as a result.

I also found that PPC was taking more time instead of less time, which was the opposite of what I was going for.

After taking these courses, I decided to invest in Amazon PPC software.

I tried 6 different softwares in order to try and reduce my time spent on Amazon PPC.

The problem with the software is that they killed a few of my best selling listings and brought down their organic rank and sales.

Finally, I worked with 3 different agencies who just spent a ton of money and didn’t give me a return on my investment with them, which left me more discouraged than I was when I started this journey.

Nothing I was doing was making sense and I was starting to wonder if this business was even worth pursuing after all, but I knew that I wanted the location freedom, financial freedom, and the time freedom that this business brought, so I decided enough was enough.

I set off on a journey to solve this problem myself.

The problem was, I had NO idea where to start.

I felt trapped. I felt like I would never figure out how to advertise successfully on Amazon.

I also felt hopeless…like I was a failure to my wife and son because I couldn’t provide the lifestyle we all wanted and we would be stuck seeing patients and working the rest of our lives!

I knew there had to be a better way, but I felt like a failure as the SeeEO of my company and as a husband.

Then one day I was at another Amazon conference, watching another Amazon PPC presentation, hoping something would inspire me to turn things around.

And there it was…

Simplicity!

The presenter, Cherie Yvette, provided this simple, laid out strategy for scaling Amazon PPC, and I could not contain my excitement. But when I looked around the room at the thousands of other people, no one else seemed even remotely excited…

Now, this was intriguing…I asked a few of those around me why they weren’t as excited as I was, and most of them said the strategy laid out on stage from this presenter was too simple!

I remember turning to Jenna and telling her that I knew this was it. This was going to be a turning point for my Amazon PPC, increasing my profits, while allowing me to spend less time on it.

Have you ever had one of those heavens opening moments?

So I made a plan right then and there to figure this out, which we’ll talk about a bit later.

I continued down this journey for the next 6 months with amazing results. I began to scale my ads to spending $30,000 to make just under $60,000 for a 50% ACoS, which brought great results for me as my goal is 62% ACoS, but it was still time consuming.

So I decided to try one more small adjustment to simplify the process even more.

It was pure terror to try something else new, when what I was doing was working so well, but I am glad I did it.

Now Eye Love is doing close to $40,000 in spend to make about $110,000 for around a 36% ACoS, but in significantly less time than before.

I am now able to scale both Amazon PPC and scale my products without a lot more work and with a proven system!

And here we are today…

My wife and I are both retired from seeing patients after selling both practices, and we run a thriving multi-million dollar business online from anywhere in the world.

I’m actually writing this from one of my favorite coffee shops in Austin, Texas – Elle’s.

My Amazon ads ACoS has dropped significantly, adding a lot of profit to my bottom line and I do it in a fraction of the time it took before.

I get to spend as much time as I want with my wife and son and we get to travel whenever we want.

I am able to provide the lifestyle that I dreamed of for our family. I’ve been able to work less than 25 hours per week. And I’m now able to be with my son, and never miss any of the highlights of his life.

But my real fulfillment comes from teaching others.

I have always loved teaching others (former Ohio State Professor), so I knew I had to teach others this strategy.

I now never worry about Amazon PPC eating away all my profits.

Before I embarked on this journey, I believed that you had to spend a lot of time on Amazon Ads.

What I shortly realized was that I was wrong.

You can spend less time on Amazon PPC and still profit more.

Your ability to become wealthy is unlimited and can only be held down by you and your mindset.

I originally had goals to get out of the 9-to-5 and become financially free, which you all will probably set for yourselves as well, and I blew those out of the water. But what happened along the way is that I found out who I really was as a person.

I have become obsessed with empowering and helping others believe that you too can achieve whatever you desire… whether it be a profitable business, more time with your kids and spouse, a better life, freedom to live a purposeful life, or freedom to travel.

Anyone can do this.

You all are probably thinking to yourselves, “That is great for you, but that won’t apply to my business because my business is ‘special’.”

Trust me when I say, I used to have that special business (I am in the dry eyes space) as well that nothing would apply to, but once I got out of my own head and started trying what was being taught, everything changed and my business wasn’t so special after all.

I simply used the data that I already had to simplify Amazon PPC and scale my ads.

I will get into all that in this book, but I am getting way ahead of myself…

Chapter 1 – My Way-Too-Easy Amazon PPC Strategy

Let’s go back to the beginning of 2019…

This was before I attended that conference and learned that simplicity is the key to Amazon PPC, which I will discuss more in this chapter.

I had just bought a course from one of the leading Amazon PPC Gurus that cost me close to $8,000 (not my first expensive course on Amazon PPC, but I was hoping it was my last).

I was all excited and ready to go with this new course.

I logged into the member’s area and stopped dead in my tracks…

15 MODULES and over 25 hours of videos to watch…

All of which was hosted on a platform that couldn’t speed up videos. A huge pet peeve of mine!

I had to watch 25 hours of videos on 1x speed…

I was horrified…

The problem was, this was THE GUY in Amazon PPC.

Before buying this course, I had tried a few cheaper courses as well, but nothing was clicking as they all followed very different strategies.

I always watched all the free content on Amazon PPC that was on YouTube.

I would hear of something on a podcast and try that for a few weeks.

But nothing was sticking.

So I decided to turn off my phone, let my wife know I was going on “vacation” for a few weeks, and I watched the 25 hour,15 module course on Amazon PPC.

I made the time to commit to this strategy, but again I came across a problem halfway through.

This guy was speaking in another language that I had trouble understanding.

Again, this is the problem with most Amazon PPC gurus. They not only speak over your head, but they give away just enough information to give you some success but they don’t give away their biggest secrets.

After taking this Amazon PPC course, I was even MORE confused and realized I need to do this FULL TIME or I need to hire someone that can handle it, which is not what I wanted to do.

Then I was at that Amazon conference that I talked about earlier…

The presenter provided this simple, laid out strategy for scaling Amazon PPC.

I just knew this was the answer I’d been looking for.

So I went back to my hotel room right after that presentation, called my business partner, Adam Pixler (COO of Profitable Pineapple Ads), and I implemented this over the next 8 hours on not only my ad account, but across the entire agency.

With the right Amazon ads strategy and system in place, you can prevent your business from going under and start saving a significant emergency fund. That is what I will be walking you through in this book while at the same time giving you a step-by-step guide with pictures. You can also get the accompanying videos on our website, profitablepineapple.com.

#1 Mistake I See Clients Make

Amazon PPC can be as difficult or as simple as you want to make it. What I commonly see when I work with clients is that they’ve been implementing too many different strategies and are now confused as to what to do next. Their ACoS (advertising cost of sale) is way too high (but they aren’t sure what their ACoS should be), they don’t know what keywords to pause, or they don’t know how to expand their campaigns to scale them. If any of this feels like you, YOU ARE COMPLETELY NORMAL. It was me before I discovered my strategy.

This simple strategy will help you make more sales and increase your organic rank on Amazon, while decreasing your ad spend inside Amazon PPC. This is the step that your competition is NOT doing. I would say less than 5% of Amazon sellers are doing this.

So what is my exact strategy?

It is simply mining and then isolating the 20% of search terms in your account that are driving 80% of your results.

I will be walking you through a simple strategy to help scale your campaigns and isolate these search terms.

Doing this assumes that you have been running Amazon PPC for at least 30 days and have made sales from it.

If you are just getting started, don’t worry, chapters 3 and 4 are all about if you are starting from scratch. I will discuss how to find the search terms to go after when you are launching a brand new product. This can also be used for existing products to find more keywords and to create a great negative list.

Pareto’s Principle or the 80/20 Rule

Pareto’s Principle also applies to Amazon PPC. Pareto’s Principle states that most things in life are not distributed evenly, but rather 20% of the input creates 80% of the results. Put in other ways…

20% of your employees produce 80% of your results

20% of your customers create 80% of your revenue

20% of your products produce 80% of your revenue

And 20% of customer search terms on Amazon drive 80% of your sales!

We want to find and SCALE those customer search terms and apply it to the products that are producing the results for you.

You can find these search terms in your Amazon PPC reports.

When I implemented this, ignored all the other PPC strategies I had learned, and stopped chasing shiny objects, my ability to profitably advertise really took off.

20% of your products are producing 80% of your results

Before I get into what to do with the 20% of search terms that are driving 80% of your sales, lets first discuss your products. Every business I have run and every business we have managed is the exact same. 20% of your products are producing 80% of your revenue.

The problem I see with most sellers is they are splitting their budget between all their products and not focusing it on those products that are producing the results for them. This may sound a little crazy and might scare you a little, but I want you to stop advertising for the products that are not producing for you and move all that budget, time, energy, and mindspace to the 20% of your products that are producing 80% of your results.

In Eye Love, we have close to 70 SKUs.

Can you guess how many of these SKUs we focus our advertising efforts on? Can you guess how many of these SKUs we focus our time and energy on?

14.

20% of 70 is 14. 14 of our products produce 80% of our revenue.

When you take the 80/20 rule and apply it a few more times (the 80/20 of the 80/20 of the 80/20), then you will see that 1% of your efforts, energy, budget, products, etc.. produce 50% of your results.

Think about that for a second. 1% of what you are doing on a weekly basis is producing 50% of all your results.

What if you just focused on even that 1%?

For us, our hero product produces exactly 50% of our revenue.

I’m not telling you to dig that deep with your advertising, but instead to focus ONLY on the top 20% of your products.

What to do with the 20% of search terms driving 80% of your sales

I will show you how to find these search terms later, but I first want to explain what to do with them.

With more budget, you can expand these search terms into broad campaigns. You can even start your auto campaigns as well. Make sure you create and upload a phrase negative keyword list to all auto and broad campaigns (more on that later).

In today’s eCommerce environment there is a missed out opportunity when it comes to alternative methods like email marketing when trying to scale your Amazon FBA Business. We are going to do a deep dive into this process and Dean from Worth eCommerce is going to provide some tips and tricks to implementing Email Marketing into your own business.

What is Email Marketing?

Email marketing is the oldest form of digital advertising and has evolved and been proven over time that it still has its relevance and place within the eCommerce space. It’s a tool that is completely underutilized and has been overlooked for years.

2 Things That Email Marketing Does for a Brand

Helps you scale faster

Massively increases your profit margin

With email marketing overtime, as your email list grows, there is a decrease in the need for ad spend. Due to this decrease in the need for ad spend, this saved money can be reinvested in the front end channel of your business to begin to scale quicker.

Is Email Marketing still effective?

Absolutely. Email marketing has been shown to generate, in many cases, up to 30-40% revenue to eCommerce businesses on Amazon and Shopify. Also, a huge benefit to growing a healthy and effective email marketing list arrives when it comes time to sell a business. A healthy email list will only increase the overall valuation and attractiveness of your business.

How to do Email Marketing

It takes basic design skills and copyrighting to implement proper email marketing. Also, it can take an understanding of logic and the customer life cycle (prospects, new customers, repeat customers, VIP customers, lapse customers, and lapse prospects). For each stage of the customer life cycle you want to have automations, flows or drips that are being sent to these people. A lot of people make the crucial mistake of trying to over-complicate this process. It’s best to just start at the foundation and focus on the 80/20 perspective. What 20% of the activity is providing 80% of the results?

It’s all about determining what each type of customer wants at each stage of the customer life cycle and then guiding them to the direction that you want them to go, which could be the sale of your products or providing great content in a blog post.

Klaviyo | How to Create Customer Engagement Tiers

An amazing resource to use for building out email flows and gaining access to customer insights is Klaviyo. Klaviyo has pre built template flows that are basically plug and play for the different types of customers in your business. This is a great way to test out different flows and seeing which ones work best for you and your business.

You start out with one email flow and build from there based off of the various types of customers that you have.

Most impactful flow – produces fastest results

Welcome Flow – collecting the customers and sending them more content

New Customers Flow – long term impact on the business – indocturnate customers into your brand and provide the customer a great experience. This is showcasing a red carpet roll out to the customer.

How to Build an Email List

Start simple.

It’s best to start out with one email flow and build from there based on the various types of customers that you have and the data feedback received.

Email is all about the 80/20 Rule (as discussed earlier) and setting up a foundation for success, which comes from the flows that you create. Then start sending out some campaigns every now and then, and then create a system and a strategy around the new campaigns. It doesn’t have to be complex, just start out simple and grow from there.

Another great tracking software that can be used is Justuno, which can create intelligent visitor profiles that identify, track, and analyze every person who lands on your website.

If your email flows aren’t generating 30% or more of your total store revenue then you have a lot of room for improvement. The average is around 20%, but you should be able to optimize your emails to generate into the range of 30-35% through just email alone.

Questions to ask yourself when building out your email flows

How much value can you give?

How can you increase the customer experience?

When are you ready to do a sale to the customer?

A lot of value can be provided to a customer just from blog posts for customers that enjoy your content.

Build out the top 4 flows – Welcome, New Customer, Cart Abandonment, and Browse Abandonment (customer is searching for your product, but not buying). If you can get to a point of sending customers at least 8 emails a month then you will be on the right path of meeting the goal of around 30-35% revenue generation from email flows.

If you’re going to do A/B testing it’s best to apply that with email capture. Seeing what offers or language is used is best at capturing the most emails and then implementing from there. Email marketing does not need to be complicated, but you do need to have a plan. With a proper plan, it becomes easy and even a little fun.

The goal of Amazon keyword research is to find words that are searched for at a significant volume AND that apply to your product. The key to this is finding keywords that aren’t too competitive, but at the same time have search volume to gain initial sales.

Personally, I like to find mid- and long-tail keywords, which has a much different meaning in the Amazon world than Google. A mid-tail and long-tail keyword in Google means a phrase of three or more words that have search volume. Whereas in Amazon, this means a phrase of any amount of words related to the main keyword that you are going after that has a LOWER search volume.

Most people are going after the super-competitive search terms with a high amount of search volume, but if you go after the lower search volume search terms, you will organically move up in the more competitive search terms.

The steps I am going to walk you through today are

Get your primary keyword

Create negative keyword list

Narrow down keywords

Sort and categorize

I use the Magnet tool by Helium 10.

Step 1 – Know your primary keyword

You should know what people are searching for when they look for your product, so I am going to assume that you know that.

Step 2 – Start a Negative Keyword List and Exclusion List from WORD FREQUENCY

Once the keywords populate, we want to take a look at the word frequency list and start a list of all the words that don’t apply to our product. Staying with the current example of eyelid wipes, let’s go through the word frequency and populate a negative list inside your Google sheet that has your competitor analysis.

Step 3: Consolidate Your List With Frankenstein From Helium 10

At this point you should have quite a few negative keyword phrases populated from going through the word frequency list above. I like to get this list of words into a paragraph form with commas to use in the next step. First, I highlight all the words from my Google sheet and paste all of them into the Frankenstein Keyword Processor inside Helium 10.

Then, I choose the options “Add commas with space,” “Maintain phrases,” and uncheck “Remove special characters.” Click Process and then you have your keyword list in paragraph form with commas. You’ll probably want to paste this into your Google Sheet as well.

Here is the complete list of the words I found: face, tea tree, tea, facial, neutrogena, baby, acne, hair, mask, kids, foam, foamin, ointment, lip, alcohol, korean, contact, contacts, clothes, lotion, powder, case, compress, acid, toner, patch, tears, drops, sunscreen, bees, foundation, burts, pink, liquid, loreal, dog, glow, patches, coconut, moist, dogs, shower, eczema, elf, vitamin, eyeliner, waterproof, oasis, bulk, antibiotic, aveeno, clothing, bags, subscribe, lipstick, deodorant, bed, dye, rx, aloe, lavender, lips, cosmetics, moistuizing, rose, wax, pills, stick, acuvue, fabric, hypochlorous, games, shaving, castor, tee, purse, nail, hot, diaper, reatine, supplement, wrinkles, toilet, tatoo, eraser, sleep, spa, infection, strips, happy, sting, ponds, johnson, bausch, primer, wound, vera, derma, aveno, mirror, kirkland, glasses, micellar, grapefruit, neutragena, blackhead, almay, dove, medication, prescription, chloride, pharmacy, razor, secret, tissue, sex, fish, supplements, liner, sponges, toothpaste, massage, grass, swabs, prosthetic, aid, oasys, kid, rash, teatree, diapers, whitening, nutrogena, babies, neutropenia, sleeping, trees, goggle, nuetragina, hazel, nuetrogena, cbd, eyeglass, hairspray, sephora, razors, theater, shaver, phone, noxema, shea, omega, antibiotics, fluroide

Step 4: Filter Out Negative Keywords From Our Search

Remember that this is a list of words that don’t apply to our product. Therefore, we want to use this list for two things. The first is that we want to exclude these words from our keyword research. Secondly, we want to use these as negative PHRASE match keywords in our Amazon PPC campaigns.

Let’s talk about excluding from our search in Helium 10. Inside Cerebro Reverse ASIN Lookup tool click on “Advanced Filters,” then add all these negative keywords that are in paragraph form and hit apply.

This took our keyword list from 23,310 to 12,552, which cut it in half, but there are still a TON of keywords to sort. Next, let’s discuss how to filter and narrow it down even more.

Step 5: Continue Your Negative Keyword List and Exclusion List from the Keyword List

Narrowing down our keyword list upfront by continuing to add to our negative keyword and exclusion list will save us hours in the backend when we start to look at the keywords we want to target.

After adding the excluded phrases and filtering them out, we are going to go through the filtered keywords and add even more words to your negative keyword list. I usually go through the top 200 highest searched words. Sort by search volume and go through these words adding unrelated keywords to your negative keyword list in your spreadsheet.

After this I was able to reduce my filtered keywords from 12,552 to 9,829. It’s still a ton of keywords, but it’s much more manageable.

Here is our updated negative keyword list: face, tea tree, tea, facial, neutrogena, baby, acne, hair, mask, kids, foam, foamin, ointment, lip, alcohol, korean, contact, contacts, clothes, lotion, powder, case, compress, acid, toner, patch, tears, drops, sunscreen, bees, foundation, burts, pink, liquid, loreal, dog, glow, patches, coconut, moist, dogs, shower, eczema, elf, vitamin, eyeliner, waterproof, oasis, bulk, antibiotic, aveeno, clothing, bags, subscribe, lipstick, deodorant, bed, dye, rx, aloe, lavender, lips, cosmetics, moistuizing, rose, wax, pills, stick, acuvue, fabric, hypochlorous, games, shaving, castor, tee, purse, nail, hot, diaper, reatine, supplement, wrinkles, toilet, tatoo, eraser, sleep, spa, infection, strips, happy, sting, ponds, johnson, bausch, primer, wound, vera, derma, aveno, mirror, kirkland, glasses, micellar, grapefruit, neutragena, blackhead, almay, dove, medication, prescription, chloride, pharmacy, razor, secret, tissue, sex, fish, supplements, liner, sponges, toothpaste, massage, grass, swabs, prosthetic, aid, oasys, kid, rash, teatree, diapers, whitening, nutrogena, babies, neutropenia, sleeping, trees, goggle, nuetragina, hazel, nuetrogena, cbd, eyeglass, hairspray, sephora, razors, theater, shaver, phone, noxema, shea, omega, antibiotics, fluroide, skin tag, cotton round, cotton rounds, spray, shampoo, oculus, warmer, honest, lens, antibacterial, mac, oil, massager, airbrush, body, 1 dollar, pampers, blush, mascara, one dollar, esthetician, hsa, zeiss, deals, tucks, pre wrap, sales, tape, deoderant, paint, free, conditioner, balls, dark spot, bleach, cream, apricot, dry cleaning, under 10 dollars, gel, sponge, whip it, tattoo, shavers, gin, cloth, jason, 2 dollar, zombie, i pads, cheap, hydroquinone, fresh balls, teeth, glass, container, pumps, luis, flawless, oatmeal, lash kit, biodegradable, rice, body wash, body soap, travel tissues, tissues, wart

Continue doing this process until you have narrowed down your keyword list to a more manageable number like 1,000 or less.

An additional filter you can add to narrow down your list is getting rid of all words that have a search volume of less than 30 searches per month.

Step 6: Download Spreadsheet and Upload To Google Sheets

Click on the export button at the top right and download as a CSV or Excel.

Upload this to your Google sheet by going to File and Import.

Then click Upload and select the file to upload.

We will go over how to sort this list a little later, but first I want to show you how to do Amazon keyword research when you have just a keyword to start your research and not the research from your competitors.

Step 7 – Sorting and Categorizing Your Keyword List

After uploading to our spreadsheet we need to sort our keywords into different categories. These categories correspond with where the customer is in the buying cycle. When a customer searches on Amazon they usually have some intent on their search.

Are they just BROWSING for a solution to their problem, unsure of what they are going to purchase? This is a customer that is not necessarily ready to buy, but might if the right solution pops up for them.

Are they SHOPPING for a particular product and know what they want to buy, but are just unsure as to which exact one they want to buy?

Maybe they are ready to BUY and know exactly what they want?

Or they might be searching for your COMPETITION and type that into the search with full intention on buying your competitor?

These are the different categories that your shopper will be in and you have to know how to bid at each level in order to be profitable and be in front of them the whole time.

When I go through my keyword list I do one of two things with each keyword. I either delete it if it is irrelevant to the product that we are selling or I color code it according to where they are in the buying cycle.

Let’s go over the example with eyelid wipes.

After opening the keyword research list inside Google sheets, I sort it by volume, starting with the highest and categorize (or delete) according to the following:

Browse

Shop

Competition

I simply go down the list and color the word depending on which category it falls under. After categorizing them all, I put all the Browse together, all the Shop together, and all the Competition together.

So what is the difference between Competition, Browse, and Shop?

Let’s go over that next.

When categorizing your keywords, let’s start out with the easiest one to understand. Your competition is pretty plain and simple and doesn’t need much explanation. If someone is searching for your competitor, it will be very hard and expensive to get them to come over to your listing and purchase your product. They are usually already using your competitor and are satisfied with its performance. We are not going to go after competitors yet as it is MUCH more expensive and requires a bit more strategy, which we will cover in a later step.

Browse and shop tend to be a little more confusing for my clients as it takes a little bit more abstract thinking to get into the shopper’s head but it is vital if you want to be successful.

Let’s start out with going over what a browse keyword is and give you some examples that apply to our eyelid wipes search. When you are just walking around the mall and not really sure what you are doing there, you are in a browsing state. You walk in and out of stores and when the customer service representative asks you “Is there anything I can help you with today?” you say “No thanks, I’m just looking (browsing).”

This is a customer that is not quite ready to buy, but is looking for a solution for their problem. When someone is trying to figure out what products could potentially solve their problem, they are “just browsing” for that solution.

Here is an example of some words that we could use for eyelids wipes. We know that eyelid wipes help with dry eye, styes, blepharitis and they are also an eye care product, an eyelid cleaner, and are an eyelid wash. But someone that is searching for these might not know EXACTLY what they want to buy. The eyelid wipes are a great option but not the only option.

Therefore we need to get in front of this person at a lower cost than if they are searching specifically for a product like ours.

Next, there are customers that are putting in words where they know exactly what they want but they are unsure of which product to buy. This is the shop category.

Moving on with our example we gave above. A customer that goes to the mall and is ready to buy high heel shoes, but is unsure which ones she wants to buy is still shopping, but has the intent to make a very specific purchase. When the customer service representative asks you “Is there anything I can help you with today?” you say “Yes, I’m looking for high heel shoes (shopping).”

For our eyelid wipes example, this could include words like eyelid wipes, eye wipes, eye makeup remover pads, eyelid scrub, lid wipes, dry eye wipes, and eyelid pads. The customer is searching for the exact product that they want, just are unsure as to which brand they will be purchasing.

We can bid a little higher than browse for these keywords as the customer has a higher probability of buying as a result of the keyword they are using. Here is our list of shop keywords from this example.

Step 8 – Hitting Our Goal

Now that we have our list of keywords organized by browse and shop, we want to go back to the whole goal of Amazon keyword research. Let’s reread the first section of this article again…

“The goal of Amazon keyword research is to find words that are searched for at a significant volume AND that apply to your product. The key to this is finding keywords that aren’t too competitive, but at the same time have search volume to gain initial sales.

Personally, I like to find keywords that are mid-tail and long-tail keywords, which has a much different meaning in the Amazon world than Google. A mid-tail and long-tail keyword in Google mean a phrase of three or more words that have search volume. Whereas in Amazon, this means a phrase of any amount of words related to the main keyword that you are going after that has a LOWER search volume.

Most people are going after the super-competitive search terms with a high amount of search volume (and you can if you have the budget), but if you go after the lower search volume search terms, you will organically move up in the more competitive search terms.”

With that being said, if you have NO budget and unlimited spending power, then go after those most competitive keywords. It will cost you a lot of money, but you will get a TON of data as a result from it.

If you are looking to take more of a conservative approach, then I recommend using the tools provided by Helium 10 to help you sort which keywords to go after. The specific tool I am talking about is the Magnet IQ score.

What is the Magnet IQ Score?

According to Helium 10, the Magnet IQ Score rating is determined by calculating the Search Volume of Amazon keywords displayed and the number of Competing Products that are also targeting each keyword. Helium 10 continues to explain that the higher the Magnet IQ Score number, the stronger the keyword to target. Keywords with higher numbers have high search volume relative to low competition from similar products.

You should beware of competitor keywords and not use the Magnet IQ Score on keywords with brand names.

Going back to our example, I will then sort my shop and browse section by Magnet IQ Score from highest to lowest. The top 5 keywords that come back in each category are most likely the keywords I will target initially with my Amazon PPC campaigns.

However, I will still use the higher search volume keywords to target in my Amazon listing.

Best Practices

Before you begin Amazon PPC make sure you have multiple ratings and a review of 4.3 or higher

Also make sure your listing is optimized with great photos, title, bullets, and A+ content

Once ratings and reviews are in, put a large coupon on your item (optional but will increase conversion rate)

Start with Exact match campaigns

If budget allows add same keywords in broad and upload negative phrase list

If budget allows, start auto campaigns and upload negative phrase list

Campaign Structure

I am a big fan of separating out every single keyword into its own campaign

Worth repeating for clarification… One search term PER Amazon PPC campaign.

Troubleshooting

No impressions → Increase your bid

No sales or low conversion → check your reviews and look at your listing to make sure it is optimized

No clicks → change your main photo or your title. Also check to make sure the words your bidding on are relevant.

Action Items

Find 5-10 keywords to target

Start exact match single keyword ad campaigns for these keywords

If you have budget, also start broad and auto, but make sure to upload that PHRASE negative list

If you want to get 50% off the first month of Helium 10, click here and use the coupon code SALESFUNNEL50.
The competition on Amazon has changed rapidly over the last few years. More and more people are venturing to selling on Amazon FBA and trying to get the maximum benefits out of it. However, most of the time, it’s quite difficult for Amazon sellers to get traffic on their products on Amazon. Helium 10’s free GEMs tool helps you get more traffic to your Amazon listings with the use of specific URLs.

How To Use Helium 10 GEMs

Helium 10 GEMs has turned out to be quite a reliable and sought-after service when it comes to boosting the traffic to your product listed on Amazon. To make the prospective sale possible, this service simply drives the traffic from the external site towards your product on Amazon. This will help you in accelerating the sales of your product.

1. 2-Step Via Brand

The first step includes simply going to the website Helium 10. Click Resources and URL Builder. This is the choice for Helium 10.

The 2 steps Via Brand on this page will have a few boxes to fill out:

The first box requires you to write the BRAND name of your product. This is mandatory, and you need to fill it in to move forward. The name of the brand will generate your URL. When written correctly, it will lead the customer to the exact product where you want him to go.

The second box that you need to fill up is the KEYWORDS box. While writing these keywords, ensure that you write exactly those that will drive traffic towards your product. This keyword will also make sure that customers reach your product as organically as possible.

The third box is optional and is for the ASIN of your product. ASIN stands for Amazon Standard Identification Number, which is specific for every product. It helps in identifying a particular product, and it helps the customer in reaching the exact product. However, writing down ASIN is optional, and you can skip it if you want.

The next two boxes include a maximum and minimum price. This is a price window, which will allow the customer to reach the product when they will search for a product within their range. This allows you to narrow down to a single product in the search for ease of finding.

Once you fill all the required fields, click GENERATE.

This will create a URL, which automatically takes the user to the required product.

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=blepharitis+treatment&field-brand=MEDIVIZ

2. 2-Step Via Hidden Keyword

2-Step via Hidden keyword leads to replicating a specific keyword, which will lead the user to the product listed on Amazon, directly.

You just need to fill in two fields; one requires you put in the KEYWORD, while in the other one, you need to put the ASIN of your product. Both these fields are mandatory to fill, and you cannot generate the URL without putting in the required information.

Once done, click on the GENERATE button, and it will create a URL, directing your potential customers to buy the product.

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=blepharitis+treatment&hidden-keywords=B07LBJHST7

3. 2-Step Via Field-ASIN

Targeted keywords, in this step, take the customer directly to the URL of your product, enticing him to buy the specific product.

You need to add Keywords and ASIN, and it will generate a new URL for you.

https://www.amazon.com/s/?keywords=blepharitis+treatment&ie=UTF8&field-asin=B07LBJHST7&rh=i:aps,ssx:relevance

4. Canonical URL

This particular process requires the user to put in five key-words in the fields, and it makes a search-engine friendly Amazon URL to use in Google, Bing, etc… Each field needs to have a different keyword, and together they will lead the customer to the product URL.

The last field will require you to put in the ASIN, which would be unique for your product.

https://www.amazon.com/BLEPHARITIS-BLEPHARITIS TREATMENT-DRY EYE-DRY EYES-MGD/dp/B07LBJHST7

5. Add To Cart

This is great to send traffic directly to your “add to cart” page. The first part of this step will require you to add in the ASIN in the field. The second part includes putting in the quantity of the product. Both these fields are mandatory and will generate a unique URL for you.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aws/cart/add.html?ASIN.1=B07LBJHST7&Quantity.1=3

6. Buy Together

These steps are pretty basic. If you have different products to sell on Amazon, you can write their ASIN in these fields, and a URL will be created to add both to cart. This is great to use to get the “frequently bought together” on your listing or if you are running a sale.

7. Targeted ASIN Search URL

This will help you showcase any products that you want to on a results page. This is great for showing off your entire product line up or a select few.

https://www.amazon.com/s/?k=B07LBJHST7%7C+B071RV1PF7&ref=nb_sb_noss

What is an Amazon Prep Center (APC)?

The aim of an APC is to be an ecommerce service provider. They typically receive goods that are bought wholesale and get them ready for retail sale. The inventory can be received from private label sellers or wholesalers, and the APC will take the product from being received as a pallet, for example, and get each individual unit ready to ship out. This may include adding the FNSKU label, poly bagging the units, bubble wrapping each unit, or doing whatever else is needed to get the units ready. The ultimate goal is to ensure that the products are Amazon compliant. The APC will then go into Amazon Seller Central on behalf of the client and tell Amazon what will be sent into their fulfillment centers. My FBA Prep focuses on the 50,000 customers that are selling at least $1M+ in revenue on Amazon. This allows them to provide the best customer service that they can by assigning customers to an account manager who will facilitate many different requests that a customer may require.

Why Does Someone Need an Amazon Prep Center?

The key reason that someone would want to pursue an APC is because time is very valuable for a lot of businesses. Because an APC takes care of the prep and fulfillment side of the business, that business can then better focus on other areas where their time can be used to further grow their business. For example, if you’re a wholesale seller, your time would be better spent finding suppliers than it would be prepping. If you’re a private label seller, your time could be better spent coming up with better products to sell, doing merchandising/bundling, or advertising/optimizing your current products for further growth.

When someone analyzes their business and is able to point out what their focus is, it’s very rare that the focus is logistics. Amazon prep and logistics is not a selling point for a business that is in ecommerce selling individual products, and it’s actually seen more as a commodity piece. Ultimately, a brand should focus on what makes them unique and the Amazon prep center should handle the logistics, so they don’t have to. This is key for any brand looking to expand their business.

How to Choose an Amazon Prep Center

An APC exists to make your life as a business owner easier. To ensure that they fulfill this service to you it’s best to have an APC that is easy to get a hold of during urgent times and one that fits seamlessly into the entire flow of your business. When searching for an APC one of the key indicators to look for is their customer service. Ensure that they are readily available and willing to help at any stage of the Amazon Prep process. They will be in control of the backbone of your business, your inventory, so it’s best to be careful when making this decision.

Do You Have Your Customers Do More FBA or FBM?

Most customers that are able to scale their businesses the quickest and that are the most profitable end up using a hybrid of both FBA and FBM. It is recommended that 75% should be dedicated to FBA and FBM the other 25%. The reason for this is because the Prime badge converts better with customers than selling FBM (which will not show a Prime badge). Also, it’s great to have FBM in addition to FBA as a way of diversifying and reducing any risk that could occur with one channel. During times like these in 2020 when we can see longer shipping times or reduced inventory limits with FBA, FBM is great to have in order to provide a backup for fulfilling the needs of customers as well as a quick way to replenish FBA inventory.

Pro Tip: Most customers that are purchasing your products through FBA are expecting to get their shipping for free through Amazon Prime, so it’s best to offer free shipping through FBM if it’s ever necessary to flip from FBA to FBM. Also, the SKU number should be included in your Amazon PPC advertising, so that it’s easier to identify the ads for certain products when a switch occurs between FBA and FBM.

We’re going to be going over 10 strategies to implement for Prime Day, but the last one is the one you will want to really pay attention to….

#1 Prepare for Growth

Amazon Prime Day sales grew more than 70% in 2019 compared to the previous year… and that was before COVID. It’s likely that more people are turning to online shopping for a lot of their needs during this unique 2020 year, so you should be prepared that Prime Day could be surprisingly larger than previous years.

#2 Get in Front of Prime Members

As of 2019, more than 100 million customers have Prime membership in the US, accounting for 62% of the total Amazon customer base. This is great news for entrepreneurs and brands that are currently selling off Amazon, because Amazon provides a platform and an opportunity to expand and grow by getting in front of potentially millions of new customers everyday. This would have been unheard of 10 years ago.

#3 Pay Attention to Your Budgets

The first peak is usually around 11 AM PST, followed by the second peak at 6 PM PST. This time is expected to be the most active duration for shoppers during the day and after work. You’ll want to make sure that you check your budget directly after these times, because your budget may be depleted and you want to make sure that there’s enough available for the next peak time. DON’T MISS OUT.

#4 Use Amazon Prime Day Deals

Participate in the deals that Amazon has to offer you as a brand selling on their platform. Amazon provides these opportunities to brands selling on Amazon, because they want you to sell and sell well.

#5 Lightning Deals and Prime Exclusive Deals

Usually lightning deals are required to be submitted well in advance of Prime Day, sometimes months in advance. One of the advantages of setting up lightning deals, alongside setting up an auto PPC campaign, is that Amazon puts your product on their Amazon Today’s Deal page where it’s listed with thousands of other products that are being discounted. This is great exposure for your product and it’s a great way to gain more customers over a short period of time. Prime Exclusive Deals are another way to attract new customers or provide exclusive discounts to your customers, usually between 20-40% off.

#6 Product Bundling Opportunities

Amazon allows you to create virtual product bundles by using your separate FBA listings and bundle them together to sell them as one bundle. You want to create as many of these bundles as you can with as many products that you have in order to provide all of these options to customers. Also, another advantage of creating these bundles is that it takes up a ton of real estate on your listing, so it’s essentially just more free advertising on your listing, pushing any competitor’s ads further down the page.

#7 Leverage External Traffic: Social Media, Influencers, and Google Ads

It’s extremely important when developing a brand to develop a relationship with influencers on various social media platforms or develop a brand following on your own social media pages. If you don’t have one now before this Prime Day, it’s never too late to start preparing for the next year. There are many influencers in your space out there willing to talk about your product, but a relationship isn’t developed by paying an influencer to drive traffic for you. You must develop that relationship so that it’s long term and can create some opportunities down the line.

In regards to leveraging external traffic, if you have search terms that are working on Amazon then why wouldn’t they work on Google? It’s definitely worth it to drive traffic using Google ads. If you’re doing a deal for Prime Day then you can take that search term for that product as well as the discount that you’re providing and create a Google ad that points the customer directly to Amazon. Usually Google ads tend to be less expensive than Amazon and can sometimes provide just as much traffic and a low average cost of sale.

#8 Competitor Analysis

Find high search volume keywords and start advertising on those. Using the ASINs from your top product competitors you have the ability to create product targeting ads (sponsored display or sponsored product) that will show your product’s ads on and around their listing. Sponsored display ads tend to work best because they appear higher up on the competitor’s listing. This is a great way to get the most amount of impressions on your product. If you have a coupon on your product this will also show up on that ad and entice a customer to check out your product over the competitor’s product.

#9 Download Your Search Term Reports

It’s always a good idea to download your search term reports on a monthly basis and go back as far as Amazon will allow you with the time frame to maximize the most data that you retrieve (usually 60 days). You can then organize this information to see which keywords are providing you with the most sales and revenue. After this information is discovered you can then use the next strategy to really take your sales to the next level.

#10 MOST IMPORTANT STRATEGY: 80/20 Principle

20% of inputs create 80% of results. When this is applied to your business and Amazon specifically, 20% of your search terms create 80% of your revenue. It’s important to focus on those 20% of search terms around this time (Prime Day and Holidays), because you can put all of your ad spend on the search terms that make up most of your revenue and this is a great way to maximize your sales.

What can you do to focus on your 20% of search terms? Make sure these terms are in Exact Match Campaigns. It’s recommended that you do single keyword campaigns (1 keyword per 1 match type per campaign). The reason for this method is due to the ability to customize the bid adjustment for each individual search term, adjust your budget for each search term, and be able to monitor more closely what is working during this time of high traffic.

At Profitable Pineapple, we are an agency that enjoys working with and growing brands.
